“I did get the opportunity to ride the saddle (a weekend long ride moving cattle) and its great. Very comfortable for long hours in the saddle. A lot of my riding is not on trails so I love that it supports a crupper when I'm descending of ridges down steep draws.

I normally ride my Aussie when I'm traversing the mountain so this saddle works great with its design combining the best of the Western and English saddle styles together”…..

Join Buckaroo Leather at the Light Hands Horsemanship

May 30th - June 2nd 2013
Santa Ynez. Ca

Light Hands Horsemanship is the brain child of these great horsemen, Dr. Robert M Miller, Eitan Beth-Halachmy (Cowboy Dressage), Lester Buckley, and Jon Ensign. This innovative concept and format in the teaching of horsemanship was born from horsemen and women asking these clinicians... “Ok, you have shown us how to start a young horse, now what?” or “This is great to see such an advanced horse but how do we get there?

Always listening to the needs of their horse public the four of them decided to form a group of horseman in a clinic setting that will take you from “Birth to the Advanced Horse.”

Each of these clinicians are unique and committed to their particular field of teaching and training.   One of the things that they all have in common and will stress in their presentations, is the use and development of “LIGHTNESS.”

“LIGHTNESS” is their cornerstone, it is what all 9 clinicians strive for from their “first touch thru advanced training”. You will see “lightness” from the hand held touch of a lead line to the hand and rein communication of the advanced horse and rider.

Values:
Listen before speaking.
Observe before acting.

Empathize before judging.

Lead by example.

Look inward for answers.
Commit to lifelong learning and self-improvement.

From Dr. Robert Miller

....."The horse is one of the most perceptive , most reactive, most responsive, most aware, and fastest learners of all creatures. Why then has it been the subject of so much severity, the recipient of so much pain, the victim of overuse of tools such as the whip, the spur, and the bit?

If we learn the principles of teaching and scientifically correct means of communication with another species, then we can train horses with the LIGHTEST of stimuli, produced with our hands, our voice, our seat, our legs."

Along with the cornerstone clinicians this event will have our good friend horse trainers Richard Winters and Sarah Winters.  Richard and Sarah will be presenting a colt starting demonstration with a beautiful young Andalusian. Sarah will be teaming up with legendary horseman Jack Brainard for an advanced horsemanship demonstration you won't want to miss.

Also in attendance will be trainers Jack Brainard, Sheila Varian, Mary Ann Kennedy, and Rick Lamb will be the MC.

This event is sponsored by Spalding Laboratory and is in its seventh year. This event always sells outs, if you are interested in this event I encourage you to visit the Light Hands Horsemanship website. You can check clinic schedules, clinic topics, learn more about the trainers and more. This event will also have good old fashioned camp fire stories, a Santa Maria Barbecue and vendors, like Buckaroo Leather.

Buckaroo Leather will be there all through out the event with our quality leather horse tack on display to touch, smell and see the quality craftsmanship up close. We look forward to being apart of this event and look forward to see you all there!

Buckboard Wagons..the farmers and ranchers work horse

The Buckboard wagons created in the 1800's were used by farmers and cowboys to transport themselves and supplies. But, what is a buckboard? The "buckboard" was the front most board on the wagon that acted as both a footrest and protection for the driver. The protection being from the horse's rear hooves in case of a "buck"- hence "Buckboard" wagon.

The buckboard wagon was simple, light, had four wheels and was uncovered. There were elastic, board slats extending from the front axle to the rear axle. The seats were placed upon these flexible boards. The boards were used instead of ordinary springs. If there were springs, they were placed between the board and the seat and not attached to the axles. There were no sides on the body of the wagon, just iron rails three or four inches high. These rails would help to hold in the supplies or other packages.

The buckboard wagon was pulled by a single horse or two horses. The wagon was steered by its front wheels which were connected to each other by a single axle. The wagon had two rows of seats, the back row could be taken off if the driver needed more hauling room.

It is believed that the Buckboard wagon was created in 1841 by Horace and James Buck. They lived in Portland, Oregon, but went to Europe to study wagon making (since that is where most of the wagons/carriages started). Horace and James came back to Portland with their new skills and start a carriage business and created the Buckboard wagon.

Although, there is evidence to suggest that Horace and James created the buckboard wagon in South Carolina, where they eventually did most of their carriage business.

The buckboard wagon was a simple but sturdy all around work wagon. The farmers used it for supplies, fencing material, and transporting their families to and from town. The ranchers used the wagons for tools, ranch supplies, and animal supplies.

Much like today's ranchers and farmers with their favorite beat up old "pick up" truck, these buckboard wagons were the "pick up" trucks of the 1800's. Of course " horse power"  took on a whole other in meaning in the 1800's.

National Day of the Cowboy...Cowboy Code

This Saturday, July 28th is National Day of the Cowboy and Cowgirls.  In the spirit of this National Day, I thought it would be appropriate to post the cowboy's "golden rule".  The Cowboy Code of the West was an unwritten code that all cowboys followed and knew.

They lived their lives by this code and expected all other cowboys to do the same or deal with the consequences.

Below is the expanded version of the Cowboy Code of the West. I have also included a few interesting writings from the 1800's depicting these exact qualities of the Cowboy.

To the Cowboys of today and yesterday thank you for keeping the spirit of the code alive by living it everyday.

Cowboy Code of the West
(expanded addition)

First chronicled by the famous western writer, Zane Grey, in his 1934 novel The Code of the West, no "written" code ever actually existed. However, the hardy pioneers who lived in the west were bound by these unwritten rules that centered on hospitality, fair play, loyalty, and respect for the land.

If it's not yours, don't take it.

If it's not true, don't say it.

If it's not right, don't do it.

Cowboy's word is his sacred bond

Bargains sealed with handshake are more binding than legal documents

be loyal

Demand square dealings

Be proud of your occupation

Lay down your life, if necessary, for the privilege of defending your outfit

Grant quick assistance to friends and strangers in need

Never tolerate cowards

Be cheerful

Endure hardships without complaining

Don't make excuses

Try to be better than the other fella

Never quit

Share anything you own with a fellow worker

Be generous with your life and money

Treat women like ladies

Never shoot an un-armed or un-armed man

Stealing and rustling are evil wrong doing

William G "Billy" Johnson, who worked the range during the 1880's, recalled that "cowpunchers (cowboys) were square shooters upright, and honest men. I never heard of a cowboy insulting a woman. If they were not up to par they were soon run out of the country."

From the Texas Livestock Journal 10/21/1882- wrote of the cowboy's courage, chivalry and loyalty.

"We deem it hardly necessary to say in the next place that the cowboy is a fearless animal. A man waiting in courage would be as much out of place in a cow camp as a fish would be on dry land. Indeed the life he is daily compelled to lead calls for the existence of the highest degree of cool calculating courage. As a natural consequence of this courage, he is not quarrelsome or a bully. Another and most notable of his characteristics is his entire devotion to the interests of his employer. We are certain no more faithful employee ever breathed than he, and when we assert that he is par excellence, a model in this respect, we know that we will be sustained by every man who has had experience in this matter."

(both excerpts from the book "Cowboys of the America's" by Richard W Slarta)

A great example of the Cowboy Code......Two cowpunchers out looking for work rode up to a Texas ranch in time for dinner, expecting the customary offer of a free meal. The boss fed them, but afterward demanded 50 cents in payment. Outraged at this violation of Western hospitality, the men roped a three-year-old steer belonging to their host and used a saddle ring to brand on its flanks the message: "Meals—50 cts." The steer was left to roam the range and proclaim the owner's ignominy.

As another necessary consequence to possessing true manly courage, the cowboy is as chivalrous as the famed knights of old. Rough he may be, and it may be that he is not a master in ball room etiquette, but no set of men have loftier reverence for women and no set of men would risk more in the defense of their person or their honor.

At Buckaroo Leather American Made is not just a sales slogan, standing tall behind our Buckaroo logo is honesty, hard work, dedication, sacrifice and integrity. In our journey of the last 30 years we have met many amazing artists, business horseman and women, craftsmen and customers who still live as we do by the American Cowboy Code of the West.
