Old West Cowboy Valentines Poem

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Here is a traditional old west Cowboy poem for your sweetie!
Remember Cowboys' needs were simple!!!!

A love Poem

My horse is brown,
my dog’s name is Blue.
I feel so lucky to
have someone like you.
Your hair is like cornsilk
blowing in the breeze.
It’s softer than Blue’s
without all the fleas.
Cut from good cloth
like my best longjohns,
You pluck chickens all day
and still sing sweet songs.
I think I’m in love,
and I’m tickled pink.
We go together like, a skunk goes with stink

When I am an Old Horsewoman.....

 Constance Reeves, Cowgirl

A few years ago I found this poem,
"When I am an Old Horsewoman" by Patty Barnhart.....

When I am an old horsewoman

I shall wear turquoise and diamonds,

And a straw hat that doesn’t suit me

And I shall spend my social security on

white wine and carrots,

And sit in my alleyway of my barn

And listen to my horses breathe.

I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night

And ride the old bay gelding,

Across the moonstruck meadow

If my old bones will allow

And when people come to call, I will smile and nod

As I walk past the gardens to the barn

and show instead the flowers growing

inside stalls fresh-lined with straw.

I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair

as if it were a jewel

And I will be an embarrassment to all

Who will not yet have found the peace in being free

to have a horse as a best friend

A friend who waits at midnight hour

With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes

For the kind of woman I will be

When I am old.

Originally published in The Arabian Horse World magazine in l992

Constance Reeves, Cowgirl

This poem was a huge hit and still is!! So I went on a search for the author Patty, and I found her. Here is what I learned.....

Patty started writing for an equine newsletter in the late 70's and 80's. This is where she started writing her poems. Patty decided to send her poems to a magazine. The editor contacted Patty to publish her work.... and the rest is history. Patty submitted "When I Am An Old Horsewoman" and it took off, appearing on all kinds of websites!!!

And while the Poem is incredible, what Patty does today is even more interesting and fun!!! Patty has a beautiful guest ranch in Lakeview, Oregon called Willow Springs Guest Ranch. The fun and interesting fact of this ranch is that it is run totally "off the Grid" !!!!

Patty and her husband Keith moved to their present location, Lakeview Oregon, in the fall of 1996. It was their intention from the beginning to make their 2500+ spread into a guest ranch. They swung open their gate for clients a few short years later.

The ranch is surrounded on three sides by public land which makes the riding pretty much unlimited and guests can bring their own horses and point them in almost any direction and ride. The ranch does get a fair number of international folks and guests without horses of their own, and they maintain a herd of quiet ranch horses for those guests. The vistas are spectacular and encompass high desert sage flats, pine forests, rim rocks, and even a lake or two depending on where the guest ride.

The ranch has a high volume of repeat clients that Patty and Keith think of as friends. They love to sit around the campfire with them, eating Keith's good Dutch oven fare, and thinking about what the day has presented.

When Patty and Keith moved to Lakeview, they realized there was no commercial electricity and that they would have to generate their own. There was a small existing array of solar panels, which they relied on for several years. They eventually put in an up-dated system, a wind generator. They have a propane generator when there is neither wind nor sunshine, which is not often!

Their cabins are outfitted with propane fireplaces and hot water heaters for creature comfort and LED lanterns for use after sundown. The guests love it!

Patty says..."I think we all have a sense of getting in touch with our "inner pioneer"! "

Almost all the guests ask about Patty and Keith living "off the grid" and Keith is happy to give the green energy tour.

Their guest season begins in April as a Bed and Breakfast, then midway through May they offer horse-back riding and outdoor dinners. This continues through September when they put the outdoor activities on hold until spring, but they offer the ranch experience as a Bed and Breakfast for the month of October.

If you want a true "Old West Cowboy Experience" with a "green" twist, visit this ranch!!!! And while you are there tell Patty how much you love her Poem!!!!!!

Old West Singing Cowboys...Roy rogers, Gene Autry, Sons of the Pioneers

My Favorite Old West Singing Cowboys

They Don't Make Them Like they Use Too!!!

I was searching through youtube and came across some old videos of some singing cowboys. Pioneers like Gene Autry, Sons of the Pioneers, Roy Rogers, Porter Wagoner, Johnny Cash and I got to thinking that they really don't make them like they use too!!!

While I think there are some great country singers out there today, these singing cowboys of old are still the best.

So I decided to put together a post to share a few of my favorites. Enjoy the trip down memory lane!

Sons of the Pioneers

The Sons of the Pioneers is a classic group of signing cowboys that were icons of the American West and western music. The group was founded in 1934 by Roy Rogers. The Original group consisted of Tim Spencer, Bob Nolan, and Roy Rogers. The Sons of the Pioneers has lasted the test of time. They still perform today in Branson, Missouri.

To learn more about the Sons of the Pioneers here is a great website to visit......http://www.sonsofthepioneers.org

The Sons of the Pioneers Singing a classic...
"Ghost Riders in the Sky"

in the photo from left to right Tim Spencer, Bob Nolan, Hugh Farr, Roy Rogers (Gus Mack, announcer).

Story Behind the Song Ghost Riders in the Sky

The inspiration for this song comes from an Indian legend. Ghost Riders in the Sky was written by Stan Jones. When he was a young boy, 12 years old he needed to finish up his chores. So he saddles up his horse and goes out side to finish them. While riding up a hill he comes across an old cowpuncher gazing into the sky. The cowpuncher tells young Stan to look in the sky and see the red eyed cow of the devils herd. Stan looks up and sees a strange cloud formation and the red eyes.

When Stan was older he was working for the forest service and happen to look up to the sky and saw that same strange cloud formation. It brought him back to that day on the hill with the old cowpuncher. So he went inside and wrote this classic song, Ghost Riders in the Sky.

 Roy Rogers

 An American Cowboy Icon

Who did not love to watch Roy Rogers and Dale Evans sing their way through a western.

This is a great video of Roy Rogers singing about the Vaqueros' of the Old West in the 1939 movie, "In Old Caliente".

An Old West Cowboy talkin' About His Leather Reins

Found this in a book on Cowboys.....an old west cowboy describing his leather reins in true cowboy fashion........

Leather Reins

Reins are the two leather rawhide or horsehair lines runnin’ from the bit ring to the riders hand used to guide and control the horse.

There are 2 types of reins-but many styles –the flat leather, buckled onto the bit. The other’s braided rawhide with romal and is attached to the bit by “bit” chains or “bridle” chains. These are short pieces of chain fastened to the bit ring on one end and the reins on the other end. Some riders like chains because the reins don’t get wet when the horse drinks, also keeps the horse from chewin’ the reins.

Open reins are then not tied together each independent of the other, usually ‘bout seven ft in length” most cowhands prefer open reins because if the horse falls or if the rider is throwed the reins fall to the ground.

Tied closed or California reins are tied together at the ends or the entire reins are made in one piece often made of braided rawhide
and worked into a romal at the horse end. Tied reins are not popular with most cowman, California is where the tied reins are used most, handed down by the early Spanish.

The romal (pictured here) is a flexible whip made on the bridle reins when they are fastened together. The Spanish "el romal" means literally "a branch road, a division or ramification thus attached" as it is by the loop to the bridle reins the romal becomes but a ramification of the rein, a handy addition that can be used as a quirt and dropped from the hand with out fear of it getting lost.

The romals’ removed when ropin and placed ‘rou
nd the roper’s waist which was the reason most old timers ordered romals to their waist measure.

A light romals no good if used as a quirt (pictured here) in windy weather for the lash’d be hittin’ the user in the face, a long romals no good either for it might cause the hoss to stumble and fall over it."

Buckaroo Leather carries traditional old west style western leather reins. Buckaroo Leather Western Reins have uniform balance through out the complete length Because we take care to cut them side by side. They are PAIRED together, BORN together for that exact same feel & weight for the ultimate signal and communication!

Most anyone can find Tack to meet their particular demands on the

When I am an Old Horsewoman....

A few weeks ago, I found this poem........
