Etta Place.....Who Was That Girl????

"They're beginning to get on my nerves. Who are those guys?"...A quote from Butch Cassidy played by Paul Newman in the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

 Etta and Sundance

This is a classic quote from a movie about two "infamous" outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker (Butch Cassidy) and Harry Alonzo Longabaugh (Sundance Kid). Both were well known members of the gang "The Wild Bunch". But what of the young women we see with Butch Cassidy and Sundance? Who was she?

Her name was Etta Place or maybe it was really Ethel, Eva, Rita or Ethel Bishop. There have been many theories on the true identity of Etta Place. Some say she was Ethel Bishop a young music teacher who lived in San Antonio, Texas. Another theory suggests that she was really a cattle rustler named Ann Bassett. Whatever her true identity, Etta was always described as having classic good looks.

 Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid

Those who met Etta claimed the first thing they noticed about her was her striking beauty. She had a nice smile, brown hair, and was always cordial and refined. They also claimed she was an excellent shot with a rifle. That may be why she was reportedly only one of 5 women to have ever been allowed into the Wild Bunch hideout at Robbers Roost in southern Utah.

Etta was the companion of the Wild Bunch gang for many years. It is not know exactly how she became apart of the gang. Some believe she met the gang in a brothel and started dating Parker. But, then became involved with Longabaugh later. Rumors said she married Longabaugh, before traveling with he and Parker on their "adventures" to New York City, Argentina, and Chile but nothing was ever proven. She was spotted many times with both men throughout this time, but it was her disappearance that created the biggest sensation.

Little is really known about what really happened to Etta Place.  Some say she was tired of running from the law and left Longabaugh and the gang to head back to the United States to teach.  Others suggest she died either by her own hand or someone else's in Argentina. To this day, rumors and speculations still surround the disappearance of Etta Place. Many authors and historians have tried to solve the mystery but have failed.

Maybe we should all be asking, "Who was that girl Etta Place?"

Female Jesse James....Belle Starr

 Belle Starr

The “female Jesse James”…the “bandit queen”…..all names associated with one person, Belle Starr. Belle began her life on February 5, 1848 as Myra Maybelle Shirley in Carthage Missouri. Her father John Shirley was a successful farmer and owner/operator of the Carthage Hotel. Belle was an educated woman who attended the Carthage Female Academy.

Belle’s family moved to Texas after Belle’s brother was killed during the Civil War riding as a Southern guerrilla. Her family traveled to Texas in two Conestoga wagons. Belle, only 16 at the time drove one of those wagons.

After the war, in 1866 Belle married a family acquaintance from Missouri named Jim Reed.  A year after their marriage they moved to Bates County, Missouri. In1868, Belle gave birth to a daughter she named Rosie Lee, but Belle always called her Pearl.

Jim Reed was not as successful with farming as Belle’s father. Jim’s interests were horse racing and gambling. So, he joined a gang of rustlers.

Needless to say, Jim at this point was up to no good, rustling, whiskey running, and a killing or two. Warrants went out for Jim, so he and Belle and Pearl fled to California. While there in 1871, Belle gave birth to her son James Edwin.

Belle Starr on her horse

They did not stay long in California, Jim was charged with passing counterfeit currency and they left California and went back to Texas, with Belle and the two babies in toe.

Belle and her family landed at a farm set up by her father in Bosque County. But, geography could not change Jim’s bad “habits”. From 1873 until Jim’s death in 1874 Jim cheated on his wife, robbed, held up a stagecoach and was finally killed near Paris, Texas.

In 1876, Belle found herself in Indian Territory. While there she married Sam Starr. He was a handsome man who was 4 years younger. Sam built a log cabin on a timbered knoll in Cherokee Nation called “Younger’s Bend”. Belle called it Younger’s Bend, because outlaw Cole Younger frequently hide there.

 Cole Younger, mug shot

Along with Cole Younger, outlaw Jesse James would hide out at Younger’s Bend. Belle would complain, “My home became known as an outlaw ranch”. Many of the society women spoke poorly of her and would spread horrible rumors because if this “association” with outlaws.

So Belle would lead a solitary life. She would wander off with a pillow and books for a day of reading, or would happily sit at her piano for hours.

 Hanging Judge...Isaac Parker

In 1882 or 1883 Belle and Sam Starr were arrested for the theft of two horses. She faced the court of the famous “Hanging Judge”, Isaac Parker. During her trail she was branded the “queen” of a band of horse thieves because of her previous marriage to a criminal and Jesse James presence at her home. Her and Sam were found guilty. Judge Parker sentenced Belle and Sam to one year in the House of Corrections in Detroit. After nine months Belle and Sam were released. They returned to Younger’s Bend and Belle became even more withdrawn from society.

 Belle Starr with Blue Duck

From 1885 to 1886 Belle’s second husband followed the same criminal path as her first husband. On December 17, 1886 Sam Starr was killed while at a Christmas dance. So, once again Belle was a widow.

Belle was in danger of loosing her home in the Cherokee Nation after Sam died. So, Belle married her third husband a Native American man named Jim July to fix the problem. He was 15 years younger than Belle.

On February 2, 1888 Belle was riding on an errand and was blasted out of her saddle in an ambush and killed. Her killer was never determined.

Belle Starr ‘s life was filled with crime, some her own doing and some because of whom she married. She once wrote, “It seems as if I have more trouble than any other person.” She may have been known as the “bandit queen” and the “female Jesse James”, but it seems to me she was quite a lonely and secluded woman.

The old wooden wagon rubles up to the old west town. The townsfolk stop their work and head over to greet the stranger. The stranger hops down from the wagon, he starts to unlock all the unique compartments and toolbox and starts to say,

"Step right up folks, my name is Buckaroo John. I have here in my good old wagon some fine quality leather horse tack. Step up to feel and smell the quality leather made here in the USA. I have reins, headstalls, bridles, and my newest beauty...... the 100% Mohair Pink Cancer Ribbon Breast Collar to match our 100% mohair Breast Cancer Awareness Cinch.

The Travelin' Buckaroo Roadshow will be in Winnemucca, Nevada for the 2012 WSRRA National Rodeo Finals starting tomorrow, Thursday Nov 1st until Sunday Nov. 4th.

So If you are in the area come on by and "sit a spell"  with Buckaroo John.  He loves to chat with and meet all his customers and fans
.

The WSRRA, Western States Ranch Rodeo Association, started for one reason to allow the full time and the average day working cowboy, working men and women, to have an opportunity to compete in sanctioned ranch rodeo events.

For years, larger associations have catered to the full-time ranch-hand competitor, leaving a large gap for those who work full time in other professions. By including full time ranch cowboys, smaller ranches and part-time cowboy contenders, the WSRRA will considerably enrich the ranch rodeo sport, bringing in fresh talent, showcasing more skills and encouraging seniors, women and youths to participate in a family atmosphere.

Only by continuing to expand the opportunities for all ranch rodeo competitors do we ensure that the ranch rodeo heritage will continue for generations to come.

Prairie Rose Henderson...First Sheekaroo Cowgirl

-->
Halloween is around the corner...yes I know time flies!!!! I am sure kids everywhere are making that tough decision.....

What to be for Halloween.....a super hero, princess, cowboy, cowgirl, and the list goes on!!!

I am sure many of you would have chosen a cowgirl!

But what about the true cowgirls of the 1800's. Most women in the 1800's learned to ride out of necessity from helping on the ranch or they would practice their skills out on the range. From a very early age women could stay in the saddle, break a bronc and rope a steer.

In the late 1800's, the younger horsewomen began competing against cowboys in a yearly gathering of herds -which progressed into participating in rodeo's.

One of these young horsewomen was "Prairie" Rose Henderson. She was an exuberant and talented daughter of a Wyoming rancher. Rose rode to Cheyenne to enter a bronc busting contest. Much to her dismay, Rose was told she could not ride in the contest. Rose demanded to see the rules. In the bronc busting rules there was nothing stating that women could not compete. The officials had to let her participate. As you can imagine her entrance into the arena caused quit a stir. Women were spectators...not competitors!!!

Prairie Rose came crashing out of the chute, hanging on to the bronc with all her strength....and lost! But, Rose opened the door for all women to compete in rodeos, so I guess you could say she really did win!

Eventually, Prairie Rose did have wins at the rodeos. Rose was even present a champion award by the Union Pacific Railroad.  She was known as the most flamboyant cowgirl of her time. How about this cowgirl costume for you. In 1918 Prairie Rose entered the Gordon Nebraska rodeo wearing ostrich plumes over her bloomers and a blouse covered with bright sequins.

Prairie Rose competed in Rodeos until her death. In 1932, Prairie Rose rode to a competition and was caught in blizzard. She did not survive. Her body was discovered nine years later. The only way they identified her was by her champion belt buckle.

Prairie Rose Henderson a true American Cowgirl with spirit, courage, determination….not a bad choice for a little girl to choose to dress as for Halloween!

At Buckaroo Leather we celebrate the cowgirl spirit with traditional, sheekaroo and exotic styles of Quality Leather horse tack….Ride American!
