The pink ribbon traditional handmade (the cincha below) Vaquero cincha is a custom made mohair cinch. The inspiration for this unique piece of traditional western horse tack came from a Breast Cancer survivor. It was a special gift to herself, a reminder, of her second anniversary of recovery. 

The mohair cincha has the recognizable pink cancer awareness ribbon, with the colors, pink for breast cancer, white for purity and black to honor those who have lost the battle.

The Buckaroo Leather Travelin' Roadshow at the Western States Horse Expo

The Travelin' Buckaroo Roadshow is hitchin' up the horses to the wagon to set off on the road. It will be pulling up to the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento this weekend June 8-10 2012.

Cinch up for the Cure Breast Cancer Awareness Cinch

Remember that the Western States Horse Expo is not just a place to shop exhibitors, but a place to learn and interact with other horse experts.

Over the past 13 years, Horse Expo Events has established the Western States Horse Expo as the gold standard of equine events. Below is a list of events....

The Magnificent 7 will be there. The Magnificent 7 will have a dozen of the nation's top riders convene for an intense one-day riding competition, where one horse and one rider demonstrate their skill and versatility in four events: herd work, rein work, steer stopping and fence work. On Friday night, seven finalists compete for a $25,000.00 purse, and the best horseman will receive the title of Magnificent 7 All-Around Stock Horse Champion.

The Project Cowboy – Cowgirls Only will also be there. It is presented by the American Quarter Horse Association and is “American Idol” meets “America’s Got Talent” for cowgirls.

There are trail Symposiums - Politicians and trail enthusiasts gather to discuss how to keep our horse trails open and maintained, now and in the future, and how to work in harmony with state and federal officials who oversee many of these trails.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Buckaroo Leather has started "Cinch up for the Cure" horse tack for breast cancer awareness.

For every Buckaroo Leather Mohair Cinch purchased, Buckaroo Leather will donate $20 to Susan G Komen for the Cure, Boise Affiliate.

The inspiration for this unique piece of horse tack came from Traditional Mohair Cinchas (the artisans who created the cinches) This unique piece of traditional western horse tack came from a customer, a Breast Cancer survivor. It was a special gift to herself, a reminder, of her second anniversary of recovery.

Traditional Old Vaquero Style Cinchas.....Woven with 100% Mohair

In true old Vaquero tradition, Buckaroo Leather offers new artisan handmade vaquero style cinchas.

The cinch (girth) has been in use for nearly 3000 years. The cinch didn’t make an appearance until around 700 B.C. in the Middle East when Assyrian warriors added straps to their decorative saddle cloths.

In western riding, the girth is referred to as a cinch. The cinch (girth) is a piece of horse tack used to keep the western saddle in place on the horse. The cinch passes under the barrel of the horse. It attaches to the western saddle by a single wide leather strap on each side, called a Latigo or Billet.



The latigo or Billet is a wide, flexible leather strap. The latigo is attached to the off (right) side of the western saddle at the saddle's cinch ring or "dee ring", doubled in thickness and knotted or buckled to the cinch, usually kept attached to both cinch and saddle at all times, except to make fitting adjustments.

The latigo on the near (left) side is attached to the saddle at all times, but the loose end is used to secure the saddle for riding by running it through the left cinch ring one or more times,back through the saddle's dee ring, and then finally buckled or knotted when tight. It is loosened and removed from the cinch to take off the saddle.


Cinchas, today are made from all kinds of materials. Including nylon, rayon, felt, cotton, and neoprene. The main objective of the cinch is to transfer sweat away from the horse's body and allow for evaporation. The above materials are strong, but do not absorb the sweat.

The old cowboys and traditional Vaqueros weaved their cinchas from horse hair. It was effective and strong. In much the same vane of the old Vaqueros, mohair is used in today's cinch weaving.


Mohair is a natural animal fiber and is grown by the Angora goat. The long silky hair is carded, spun and corded. The mohair is strong, flexible, and durable. The mohair is absorbent and comfortable for the horse because it is breathable.


The cinchas come in a variety of styles. They are either braided or woven and have different widths and include either brass or silver buckles or d-rings (dee rings).

The traditional vaquero cinch is a 19 strand style. The traditional cowboy and Vaquero woven designs are diamond shapes and have the influence of Native American symbols.


Buckaroo Leather carries these traditional Vaquero cinchas made from mohair and alpaca. These natural fiber cinchas are handmade with a custom design and a traditional cowboy look.

These vaquero style cinchas also have a traditional shufly hair tassel to keep the flies away!

100% Mohair Breast Collars, Mecates and Cinchs - Vaquero Style!

A new Mecate is pretty, but an old Mecate is beautiful. All of the hair prickles are worn off so the pattern is very crisp and distinct. The colors are still as bright as the day it was made. There is some dander and dirt where it has rubbed many a horse's neck, but that just gives it character!

Mohair and Mane hair Mecates are a natural alternative to synthetic fiber Mecates. They are comparable in price, yet have a longer usable life.

Below is a simple list of the benefits of having Mohair or Mane Hair Mecates:

Mane hair/mohair is very strong, yet not as heavy as other materials, lighter Mecate, lighter horse.

Mane hair/mohair, unlike synthetic materials, is not broken down by UV radiation

Mane hair/mohair as a natural animal fiber, softens with age and use

Since mane hair is slick, hard and relatively non-porous, they stay cleaner longer and are easier to clean when they do need it.

A well made, well maintained Mecate will last a lifetime and longer. There is nothing quite like a good mane hair/mohair Mecate. They have weight, but not too much, they are balanced, and a truly good one has a life of it's own.

Below is a list of the disadvantages associated with synthetic Mecates:

Nylon (yacht braid and braided parachute cord), polyester and polypropylene are all heavier than mohair/mane hair.

All synthetic materials are broken down by ultraviolet radiation from the sun, which makes them stiffen as they age. Many people think the ropes are stiff because they are dirty and think washing them will solve the problem, but it is actually the rope breaking down.

All synthetics and plant fibers (such as cotton or rayon) are slightly rough. This allows sweat and dirt to adhere to them and it doesn't take long for them to get dirty.

Beautiful Quality hand braided feel and communication. These are the best we have found braided in the old California Vaquero style. This Hackamore features our best quality all rawhide core bosal; a beautiful piece of "Old Style" rawhide braiding.
