The How and Why of Sidepull Headstalls

The Majestic Collection Sidepull

Side Pull Headstalls are used without a bit, and are very popular in the training arena and for the experienced trail horse and rider.

Many trainers have found the side pull headstall great for horses who do not except a bit very well and are fussy and tense and unable to relax and learn.

SidePull Bitless Headstall Old West Silver

It is also excellent for horses that have mouth injuries or are sensitive due to harsh training conditions.

The side pull is fast becoming the choice in early stages of ground driving and teaching the basics of turning and stopping.

A Quality leather side pull headstall or bridle is designed for the reins to connect to the rings on each side of the horses cheeks allowing the rider to communicate very clearly left and right.

Different nosebands are available depending on how much pressure you want to excerpt on their nose. The single lariat rope nose gives the most in a narrow area across the nose.

Rolled Nose Sidepull Bitless Bridle

The double rope spreads the pressure out.

The flat leather nose gives the least amount of pressure for the more trained and experienced horse.

Buckaroo Pro SidePull-Stainless

Trainers in the natural horsemanship arenas have been using different types of side pull headstalls for a long time.

The Perfectly Bitless Bridle....What it is and How to Use It.....

Buckaroo Leather is proud to be able to manufacture the Perfectly Bitless Bridle. This piece of horse tack is part of the Michaella Walker signature brand.

Michaella Walker is a dedicated horse trainer. She has over 25 years of experience working with both horse and rider. She has worked among many natural horsemanship trainers as well as the old time gaited horse trainers. The skills she learned with these horsemen and her exceptional attention to detail will transform both you and your horse.

The Perfectly Bitless Bridle

Michaella developed this outstanding piece of horse tack. The Perfectly Bitless Bridle is an equine bitless headstall, complete with a nose band and a chin strap. This chin strap (curb) and the nose band, which varies according to training needs.

Buckaroo Leather handcrafts the Perfectly Bitless Bridle from the best leather found in the U.S.A, Hermann Oak Leather.

Michaella Walker Horsemanship

This bitless bridle can be used for all the same purposes as a bit. It's effective for different disciplines: show, training,  and trail riding. A person can lunge their horse and then ride without loosing any communication. Therefore, the ground work translates right into the saddle.

(information from Michaella's Blog, read more here)

You can also watch a video here of Michaella at the Extreme Mustang Makeover. You will see Michaella display good horsemanship without a BIT! In this video Michaella is using the Perfectly Bitless Bridle....she was a top finalist!!

The Perfectly Bitless Bridle Up Close

Michaella received this question on her blog.....

"Where to affix the reins on the Perfectly Bitless Bridle".....behind the leather bar or closer to the horse's mouth.

ANSWER.....the answer depends on your progression with your horse and the bitless bridle. Read Micahaella's specific answer to this question here.......

An Indian Hackamore-a Unique Piece of Horse Tack for Bitless Riding

The Indian Hackamore is a unique piece of Horse Equipment. Its popularity is growing in the bitless riding world and with natural horsemanship.

Indian Hackamore RW318

This very unique bosal is called an “Indian Hackamore”. It is gentler than a bosal. The nose is flat instead of round. The chin portion widens and narrows to fit most any size head. The action is most like riding with a halter but with more communication and control. The ends that connect to the reins are crossed so when you pull on say the right rein the pressure goes under the jaw and around to the opposite side to bring their head around to the right. There is a breaking in period for the area under the chin to soften up and shape to your horses head. This unique diamond braid Butter nylon with rawhide nose in Brown accents is softer than all rawhide and is already broken in. Great For Bitless Riding!!

The Indian Bosal is a unique piece of equipment found in a tack room. It is a simple and often unknown solution to the many problems that bits may cause. It is a simple design, consisting only of yacht rope or rawhide much like today’s rope halters. The Indian Bosal may be attached to any type of headstall, either Western or English in style. Much like the rope halter and The Bitless Bridle, the Indian Bosal works through pressure. The ropes of the Indian Bosal criss-cross under the horse’s jaw. Your direct rein tells your horse which way to go as it would with either a snaffle bit or side-pull.

The Indian Bosal has many advantages to its use in training. The Indian Bosal can be used on young horses or old horses, despite their level of training. They work best on a horse that knows how to respond properly to pressure. If the horse has received adequate ground training in a rope halter, he should respond well to the Indian Bosal. The bosal also aids in neck reining training as the feel the pressure on the same side as they feel the rein. The horse will learn and correspond to the pressures.

The Indian Bosal will aid in curing many of the problems associated with bits and mechanical hackamores. These devices cause problems such as head shaking, bit chewing, resisting the bit and more. Many horses that will not accept the bit will often toss and throw their heads, making a dangerous situation for both horse and rider. The use of the bosal will help solve many of these problems.

The Indian Bosal is a great tool for a horse that just doesn’t like a bit and resists having a bridle put on. It will be a welcome relief to the horse when you go to put on his bridle and there is not bit going in his mouth. This makes for a happier situation for both horse and rider and will get you in the saddle sooner. The horse will not shake his head and try to get the pressure off of his nose as the rope is fairly thin and is not heavy. The horse will also be more attentive to your desires instead of playing with a bit or trying to avoid your cues.

There is little history to be found about the Indian Bosal, but as its name suggests Native Americans once used it in riding their horses. The versions found today are probably somewhat different but the concept the same. They were introduced to the cowboy’s by Native American cowpunchers that braided them out of rawhide.

If used properly, the Indian Bosal is a great alternative to bits and great for natural horsemanship.

Mark Rashid Horse Training

Mark Rashid Horse Training is located in Estes Park, Co. Mark Rashid (pronounced RASH-id) is an internationally acclaimed horse trainer known for his ability to understand the horse’s point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. He began working with horses at age ten, when he met the “old man,” who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say. Mark’s clinics center on one-on-one work with horse and rider and are immensely popular with people around the world.

When Mark decided to study the martial art of aikido as a way to improve his horsemanship, he brought the same quiet determination to it that he exhibits in his work with horses. After years of practice, he has earned a second degree black belt in Yoshinkan aikido and now teaches the “way of harmony” in the local dojo.

Mark worked full time on ranches for many years gathering herds, managing stock, and training horses. When time permits, he still enjoys working on ranches near his home in Estes Park, Colorado.

Buckaroo Leather attended a (pictured below) Considering the Horse clinic by Mark Rashid in Ione, CA a few months back. Buckaroo Leather witnessed some great horsemanship and also some of our Western horse tack in action!

Amy Allen - Horsemanship and Barefoot Trimming

Amy Allen is an experienced horse trainer/riding instructor in Shelton, WA, who specializes in unbroke and problem horses and working with students who are afraid or have been through a traumatic experience.

She also is a barefoot horse trimmer. Amy’s journey into barefoot trimming started because of her own horse. Amy owns an OTTB, TJ, who had the typical thin cracking walls, could not hold a shoe for over 5 weeks, long toes, low heels, thin soles... just bad feet. After consulting with her farrier, we tried glue on shoes. On the second set, one of the shoes broke at the quarters. Amy became frustrated because the shoes are very expensive. Amy made the decision to pull her horses shoes and since December 2002, he has never worn another pair of shoes.

Amy began researching the barefoot trim method. She educated herself by attending clinics, reading all sorts of material and practicing on her own horses. Barefoot trimming is not just about the horse's foot. It's about the body as a whole, their nutrition and their living environment.

I came across her on Facebook and was intrigued and impressed with her horse training/barefoot trimming. I encourage you to visit her website and become a fan on facebook. She also is a monthly contributor for the Buckaroo Leather Newsletter.

Jerry Tindell

Buckaroo Leather is proud to be working with Jerry Tindell's Horse and Mule School. Jerry will be working with us to design and improve on many of our large horse and mule tack styles. We are proud to be working with Jerry and are excited by his expertise and enthusiasm.

Tindell's Horse and Mule School offers private training to committed people who would benefit from our assistance when they have neither the time nor the skills required to reach their desired goals with their stock.

Their training program assists both the animal and owner with achieving expected results in a safe and effective manner. The range of training offered includes starting a young or green-broke horse or mule, re-training and problem solving for stock that have developed undesirable behaviors.

Jerry's emphasis is establishing a solid foundation; making sure the animal understands and can comfortably perform the basic principles of soft, flexible movement, while also developing good manners. This program is strongly recommended for all aspects of handling, including riding, packing and driving. It is equally suitable to English or Western riding traditions.

Jerry Tindell's training process is based on 6 steps of control. These 6 steps are identified, used and taught in three stages: round pen, ground work and riding. It is highly recommended that the owner become familiar with these 6 steps during the course of the animal's training. They are the beginning, middle and end of creating and maintaining a willing equine partner. Most behavior issues include a weakness in at least one of these steps, and can be fixed to a great extent by training the horse to be better at them.

Farah DeJohnette Discusses Bitless Leather Side Pulls

I just read, Farah DeJohnette's new article from her Blogazine. Farah is a skilled horse trainer and her new article gives great insight to why she uses bitless leather bridles. Also, visit her website and follow her on facebook!

Bitless: Why I Do It........

my journey through Horsemanship and Training, I have come to look for better ways to communicate with my horse with equipment and without. The more skilled I have become the less reliant on equipment I have become.

I always used what I'd call "cheap" western Side Pulls from time to time in my training in the past but wasn't into them enough to convert completely. I hadn't found one that compared with my fine english bridle quality. I also was able to ride in halters, leather and rope, but found them a bit sloppy and imprecise for more than a fun hack around some slightly higher level work. Mechanical Hackamores were to me as aggressive if not more then some bits with bicycle chain and wire wrapped with leather in some designs.

When I found the Buckaroo Leather Side Pull and then went on to design the Padded version with John Brand, I had no idea this bridle would become my go to training piece of equipment until I had it in my hand and kept going back to no matter what type of horse I was riding.
I use it on soft horses, heavy strong horses, young horses, jumpers, dressage horses, western horses and more. I don't care if the horse is green or advanced I still use it.

Of course I still use bits because unfortunately, some competitions wont allow you not too, but hopefully that will change soon. I don't feel I need a bit at all though. Give me enough time with a horse and I can get him to ride beautifully in a Side Pull. Let me reiterate "TIME". It took me time to get the heavy pullers riding nicely in the Side Pull but I took that time as opposed to taking the easy way out and going to bigger bits and gadgets. I took the Time to teach them to be more supple, more balanced and strong through proper work and fitness.

Which leads me to another very interesting point. In my conversion of many horses to Bitless for training, I made a discovery about a common problem. Horses opening their mouths during training with the bit. I discovered that mouth opening had more to do will lack of suppleness in the Poll and being on the forehand then it had to do with the bit! How did I find this out? Well while training some known mouth openers with bits, Once I switched them to bitless guess what? When they were resistant, or unbalanced or both, They opened their mouth with NO BIT. When they were stiff in their body and poll, They opened their mouth regardless of whether they had the bit or not.

What does this mean? To me it means that the Poll and jaw are connected (not a new discovery in training) but why are we working on the jaw when the problem is originating in the Poll and body?

Hence back to why I use a Side Pull bitless bridles and Neck straps (Corderos). They allow me to talk directly to the body parts I need to without interfering with other body parts and possibly even DISTRACTING the horse from the area that needs focus. I'm not saying there are not dental problems and bitting issues that can arise from the mouth, but I am saying you can find out if you try a bitless bridle and in fact it may be the answer to horses with dental and mouth issues. Just like when I want to see if the saddle is compromising the horses desire to perform. I ride him bareback or with a bareback pad. If he rides fine, then I know the saddle is a problem. More food for thought from yours truly and my two cents. The Best Horse Sense
What I Need for the Future I Learned in the Pasture.

A great website for all horse lovers! Whether you are a western rider, trail rider, or just for leisure, you will appreciate the horse sense!

Below is some information about this website.

Some of the most important life lessons I have learned have been from the back of a horse. I learned to love horses in my late thirties. Unlike someone who has been around horses since childhood, I have learned horsemanship through an adult’s eyes. As a result, those lessons have spilled over into the rest of my life. I have become a better person since I started playing with horses.

I want to share those lessons on leadership, understanding, forgiveness, and love that I learned from my horses. Come join me on this adventure.

We all know horses need a farrier! John has some great articles on how to keep your horses hooves' healthy. Great information for all breeds of horses, western riding, trail riding, competitive riding and overall horse health.

Below is some information about John,

John Silveira is a Farrier, Aikido practitioner, spiritualist, born and raised in San Mateo California the bay area. For information on his shoeing method and the 100% track record just go to http://care4horses.com/ and leave contact information. Thank you and remember to Care4Horses.

An excerpt from his website-

Uncovering more controversy with Barefoot vs Shod horses. To be perfectly honest with you this Barefoot thing is the ONLY area i get any flack from when i address issues surrounding it. And it's ALWAYS from the Barefoot People. So be it !! I want to be clear - i'm NOT against barefoot horses - it's just that not all horses can go barefoot - just won't happen.

I have long been fascinated by relationships. Whether it is the relationship between humans and their pets, a person and a higher power, or musicians and their instruments, I have studied it in an attempt to understand it and help the person deepen those relationships and achieve harmony.

Talk2theAnimals.net is designed to be a place to gather and disperse information on animal communication and animals.

Thomas Herding Technique-Discovering the Communicated Equine

Below is some information about the site and their mission statement-

A spiritual connection with the horse is paramount to the physical, For it is this higher power that transcends and controls all that follows.

The mission of Thomas Herding Technique is equine behavior and stress management through better human/horse communication.

A wonderful ranch and website! Below is some information-

Being able to move to the USA (1995) and especially to the Black Hills was a gift from Heaven. I brought my horse along, Djinni-Fee, my dreams and visions of living in and with nature, surrounded by horses, learning more about natural health care and turning my passion for painting portraits into recognized works of art.

None of these dreams would have become reality if not for my husband Jack, humble, patient and alway encouraging. He generously invited me into his heart and Plenty Star Ranch. Together we turned this most beautiful place into a guest ranch and horse camp, where I can also offer natural horsemanship clinics, using some of our awesome herd of Spanish Mustangs. Come visit - coffee is always on!

Smoke Creek Ranch is located in the south central area of Pennsylvania. We are a young operation, raising and training AQHA and APHA bred horses. Our breeding herd is built on the famous "Three Bars" bloodlines, Zippo Pine Bar, Doc Bar and our favorite, Sonny Dee Bar.

The Pulling Breast Collars!- Buckaroo Leather's fastest growing new product
This Breast Collar is very popular among Western riders, particularly ropers. Instead of crossing a horse's chest from side-to-side like some other styles, pulling breast collars sit just above the line of a horse's shoulders buckle around the pommel of the saddle. According to ropers and other riders that prefer pulling breast collars, it allows the horse more freedom of shoulder movement and better leverage when pulling.

Quality Hermann Oak Leather with a width of 2 1/2". This Pulling style Breast Collar is oiled & stitched with a soft chap lining and finished with Nickel Plate roller buckle hardware; the BC65 version is stitched heavy harness leather. Both Breast Collars have an over the shoulder fit. It is designed to wrap through the saddle swells, perfect for a pulling position.

With a traditional Cowboy look this Pulling Breast Collar is designed for roping or heavy mountain horse riding. The quality leather color is Golden with a Hand Tooled basket design. The width is 2 1/2" wide with Nickel Plate hardware. This Pulling Breast Collar has an over the shoulder fit. It is designed to wrap through the saddle swells, perfect for a pulling position.

The Natural Horsemanship movement has created highly functionable Horse Tack......

The Natural Horsemanship Movement has
evolved tack items as Mecates, slobber straps,
Rope Halters and complete Mecate Bridles
into very popular training and pleasure
riding choices. They are all so versatile........

Rope halters of course have no hardware and
are so adjustable. They are designed to place
pressure points were needed and roll up into
an easy pack away size or leave on under your bridle.....

There are now designs with rings tied into the cheeks
to connect your reins to and ride on down the trail......

Side pull headstalls have evolved somewhat from
this also.....

Mecates tied onto your bridles with slobber straps
have become so popular because they are available
in so many different materials to fit your personal
preferences. Also because you can easily adjust the
length of your reins......

Slobber straps are also available in many different
styles. From plain get the job done, to custom
hand tooled, also with silver conchas and buckles....
The popular ones lately buckle on and off the bit
without having to untie your mecate.....
