 Lawson Family

If you go to Leann Berry Lawson’s Facebook page you may see quotes like:

“This young lady just won a CMSA (Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association) Major! Ladies Level 2 Division Winner! Congratulations Rylee Lawson!!
We are SO happy and proud of you!!!!!!

or

“Smokin fast! Well... Not as fast as Dylan P Lawson !!!! He beat his dad! Dylan took first place in the limited division! He won $400.00 and a new Pistol!”

Leann is very proud of her children!  She should be!  It is exciting to see these two youths have such passion and drive!! Congrats to Leann and Kenny for fostering their passion!!!!

 Rylee, Dylan and Madi

Leann and her Husband Kenny Lawson of Silver Dollar Ranch are not just proud parents but they are skilled horse trainers and mounted shooting competitors. The Silver Dollar Ranch offers horse training, riding lessons and training horses for Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Kenny is a third-generation horse trainer. Kenny’s father, Rob Tanner, who was a World Champion and Hall of Fame trainer, was Kenny’s biggest influence. From a very young age, Kenny worked for his dad learning how to train one of the most complex breeds of horses, the American Saddle-bred. Kenny has the ability to educate horses without taking their curiosity from them.

 Kenny Lawson

All of Kenny’s training programs are based on a philosophy of mutual respect between horse and rider. He has solutions for horses with aggressive ground manners, to trailer loading issues or, for the competitor that would like to perform at the next level. Kenny also trains horses for many different disciplines. There are weekends where he, his family and clients will compete in Western Dressage on a Saturday and Mounted Shooting on a Sunday, all on the same horses. Kenny believes that a well-educated horse should be able to compete in many sports and activates.

Leann Berry

Buckaroo Leather is proud to be apart of the Silver Dollar Ranch family! We our honored to have Kenny and the whole family not only endorse but use Buckaroo Leather's Saddle and Horse Tack.

Visit the newly created Kenny and Leann Lawson category on the Buckaroo Leather website here.

Thank you to Richard Winters for this great video!!!
Richard Winters of  Richard Winters Horsemanship demonstrates  the Bitless Loping Hackamore from Buckaroo Leather.

Horseman and Clinician Richard Winters has been helping people through training, clinics, horse expos and horse training DVD’s and videos for over thirty years. Richard is a performance horse trainer with a natural horsemanship touch. From reined cow horses to jumping and dressage, Richard’s horsemanship is universal.

This is our quality AMERICAN made western Hermann oak leather hackamore Loping soft nose bridle you hear about from the cutters, reiners, natural horsemanship trainers, all wanting some relief for their horses from the bit! We are honored that world known clinicians Richard Winters (www.wintersranch.com) and Mark Rashid (www.markrashid.com) uses this bridle on their own horses during clinics. This bridle is a must have for anyone wanting to use a bitless bridle for some bit relief. With many horse riders using this hackamore full time!
This is a round soft nose rope caveson hackamore designed to give relief from the bit and around your horse's nose and, because it is round, it works like a sidepull/hackamore combo. The rein and caveson are all one piece of marine yacht rope with a leather wrap under the chin binding it all together. It Does not slip or tighten under the chin!!
You can also choose to add the Rawhide or soft chap leather to the nose for a firmer feel and control. The rein is a split rein 8' long with leather poppers.  or long LOOP one-piece rein.
The bridle features our working 5/8" harness leather double cheek adjustment headstall with a hand braided fiador (throat latch), which is adjustable to hold the hack in the proper position. Reins are 5/8"- 8' Nylon marine yacht rope with leather poppers.

Romel Reins A Vaquero Tool Popular Today

Romel reins are very popular in the equine world just as they were in the old days of the vaquero. The Vaquero used the romel reins for their horse training.

The 3 stages of the Vaquero horse training were…

The 1st stage - starts with a hackamore bitless braided rawhide headstall to teach the horse to yield to pressure. The reins were long hand braided horse hair mecates.

The 2nd stage - or "Two Rein" is where the Vaquero would use a thinner simpler version of the hackamore nose piece, the bosal. This bosal was lighter for this part of the stage. The mecate bridle had a spade bit and a braided rawhide romel rein. During this stage of the training the Vaquero would hold both sets of reins and the horse would be controlled with mostly the bosal and light on the bit. Then the Vaquero would transition to only using the bit and would then get rid of the bosal all together.

The 3rd stage- is called the "Straight upon the Bridle". The Vaquero handles the horse with just the spade bit. The Bit is connected with romel reins. The bosal and mecate are used under the bridle to lead the horse.

The Vaquero use to test their horses skills by tying a thread to the links section of the chain part of the romel reins. The Vaquero would then bring the horse to a stop with a “light” pull of the reins. If the thread broke - the Vaquero needed to pull to hard.

Today, Horseman and women use the Romel Reins in horse training but they are also realizing what a great all around riding style rein they are.

They are like a one piece or roping rein with a ring or tie connector with a romel connected and a popper on the end.

Buckaroo Leather offers many types of Romel Reins in different types of leather and rawhide.

We have great everyday styles of Romel Reins with supple harness leather like the Rounded Romel Rein

We also offer a classic Vaquero style Romel Rein with hand braided rawhide buttons for decoration available in assorted colors and designs

For Bitless Horse Riders...The Alex Mufson 3R Sidepull by Buckaroo Leather

“A thoughtful approach to horsemanship, working with the horse’s mind to build a willing partnership”…..
Alex Mufson of Three Rivers Horse Training

This is the philosophy behind Alex Mufson Three River Horse Training. Alex's horses work in a variety of disciplines but all share a common foundation of softness, both physically and mentally.

Alex believes to achieve this willingness involves building the horse’s confidence in both themselves and the person. In cultivating this partnership Alex emphasizes directing a horse’s thought rather than only their body. The horse is asked to take an interest in the situation and in her, working towards a relationship based on engagement instead of obedience.

“I am in love with horses and fascinated by animal behavior.  I’m so thankful to have a job where I can be inspired by horses and their people each day, and spend my time learning about an animal I love so much”…Alex

To read more about Alex’s training philosophy click here…..

The Three Rivers Horse Training is primarily operating out of the Grey Cliffs Ranch, a 6,000 acre ranch in Three Forks, outside of Bozeman, MT. The facility includes large paddocks, an indoor and outdoor arenas and round pens, trailer storage, and miles of private riding.

Alex and her horse with the 3R Sidepull Headstall

Buckaroo Leather Products is proud to be working with this very talented horse trainer to create the Three Rivers Horse Training, Alex Mufson Sidepull.

We are excited to team up with Alex to create a 3R line of quality leather horse tack. The first offering in this line is the 3R Sidepull.

$139.40

The 3R sidepull is made from the finest heavy weight Hermann Oak Harness leather or Black Latigo leather. It has that smooth, rich, "broke in" feel. This sidepull Headstall is double and sewn with a soft chap lining, and oiled for that soft supple feel. This Headstall is a Side Pull style with a width of 5/8" available in a Regular Horse size. This Headstall has a 1" wide leather noseband and is available with Nickel plate hardware. It has a Jowel strap for stability but does not have a throat latch or brow band.

Alex has requested a few modifications to the typical sidepull to make the 3R Sidepull more versatile in sizing and to prevent it from slipping into the horse’s eye.  It is also great in the cold winter, as it does not involve waiting for a frozen bit to thaw!  Thoughtful horsemanship does not require a bit, because the work is with the horse’s mind. The 3R Sidepull is an ideal headstall for those who do not want to rely on leverage and control, but want an honest examination of their relationship with their horse!

Please be sure to visit Alex’s brand NEW website and follow her on Facebook page.

A Movie for all Cowboys...."Out of the Wild" Movie

"A down and out cowboy with a painful past, Henry McBride, begins down a road of self-discovery when he is introduced to a new way of training a troubled mustang. The mustang's past and temperament mirror that of McBride's."

Does this sound like a movie you would like to see??? Well, my good friend and  horse  trainer Mark Rashid would like to see this movie, Out of the Wild a reality.
Mark, who is the writer of the book on which this movie is based is also a producer of this movie. He is very excited about this movie and is seeking funding for the movie in a new "out of the box" way.

The biggest (and really, only) hurdle Mark and the other producers have had in turning Out of the Wild into a full-length feature film has been finding investors that don't want to take total control of the project, which is something they just aren’t willing to allow. After three years of running up against the same issues with potential investors, all involved with Out of the Wild  decided to go a different route in regard to funding - A route in which they are able to retain total control of the project, while at the same time including folks like yourself, who want nothing more than to see, and maybe even be a part of, a really great horse movie.

The method they have chosen to fund their project is relatively new in the film industry, but not totally untried or without merit. Filmmakers such as Spike Lee and Zach Braff (of the TV show “Scrubs” fame) and many others have decided to forgo traditional movie financing for this new and completely “grass roots” direction known as “crowdfunding”. The way crowdfunding works is that a project’s creators set a funding goal and deadline. Then they post the project to a crowdfunding website. If people are interested in the project, they can pledge money in return for certain tangible rewards offered by the project’s creators. With enough pledges, the project gets funded.

The platform they will be using for the crowdfunding effort is a site known as Kickstarter. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing — in fact, projects on the site must reach their funding goals within a certain amount of time to receive any money at all. All-or-nothing funding might seem scary, but it’s amazingly effective in creating momentum and rallying people around an idea. In their case, if their goal of $775,000 is reached (and hopefully exceeded) within 30 days, they can keep the money and make the movie. If they fall short of the goal by the time 30 days are up, all of the pledges by individuals who supported them will simply be null and void.

There is no question that something like this is not only risky, but that it will also take a pretty big effort in order for it to work. However, there is one thing that I know for sure is that positive energy and good old fashioned "cowboy spirit" can move mountains!!!

Please share this amazing effort with everyone you know and help my good friend Mark Rashid with this amazing project.

The History of the Hackamore and Mecate

 Vaquero's

The Hackamore was used by the Vaquero's in the beginning for horse training. The Vaquero's quickly learned that this piece of horse tack was a must for every day riding too. Today the hackamore is wildly popular among the Natural Horseman and women and horse riders still true to the Vaquero ways.

The unique part of the Hackamore is that it does not have a bit. It uses a braided noseband called a Bosal. The Bosal is a special type of noseband that works on pressure points on the horse's face, nose, and chin.

Cadillac Hackamore set with Fiador and Mecate

The mecate is the rein portion of the Hackamore. The Mecate is a rope made from horse hair or soft feeling rope. The mecate can act as a lead rope too.

The traditional Mecate used by the California Vaqueros was made from the long hair of a horse's tail and was hand braided. Modern Mecates are made with horse hair and synthetic rope with a horse hair tassel at one end and a leather popper at the other end.

The history of the Hackamore and Mecate goes all the way back to 4,000 BC. The first Hackamore was probably a piece of rope placed around the nose or head of a horse not long after domestication. These early devices for controlling horses may have been adapted from equipment used to control Camels. Over time, this means of controlling a horse became more sophisticated.

The Persians in 500 bc were one of the first to use a thick plaited noseband to help the horse look and move in the same direction. This was called a Hakma. On this Hakma was a third rein added at the nose, which allowed the rider to achieve more power from the horse. Later this third rein moved from the top of the noseband to under the chin, where it is still part of the modern Bosal style Hackamore with Mecate reins.

The Hackamore used in the United States came from the Spanish Vaqueros in California. From this, the American Cowboy adopted two different uses, the "Buckaroo" tradition closely resembling that of the original Vaqueros and the "Texas" tradition which blended some Spanish techniques with methods from the eastern states.

Bosal Hackamore Style

These types of Hackamores include the Bosal and side pull. The Bosal Hackamore uses the Vaqueros tradition of the braided noseband and the Mecate rope.

The Mecate is tied to the Bosal in a specialized manner that adjusts the fit of the Bosal around the muzzle of the horse and creates both a looped rein and a long free end that can be used for a number of purposes.

For the mounted rider, the free end is coiled and attached to the saddle or tucked under your belt. When the rider dismounts, the lead rein is not used to tie the horse to a solid object but used as a lead rope and a form of lunge line when needed.

A properly tied Mecate knot allows wraps of rope to be added to the knot in front of the rein loop in order to tighten the Bosal noseband on a horse or the rope can be unwrapped to loosen the Bosal.

This Vaquero style of Hackamore is used in Western Riding and is an indispensable part of the Vaquero way of making a California reined horse. It is also used with horses that have dental issues, where a bit would be painful. Some riders also like to use this style of Hackamore in the winter instead of a frozen metal bit.

Sidepull Headstall / Hackamore

The side pull Hackamore or headstall is a modern design inspired by the Bosal style. This style has a heavy noseband with side rings that attach the reins on either side of the head. This allows very direct pressure to be applied from side to side.

                             Loping Sidepull Hackamore

The noseband is made of leather, rawhide, or rope with a leather or synthetic strap under the jaw. It is held on by a leather or synthetic headstall.
